Removing trees for construction can be hazardous, so it's best to hire a professional tree removal service. Here are some things to consider when removing trees for construction:
Safety
Tree removal is especially dangerous when trees are close to people, buildings, or roads. Cranes can be used to lift trees out of the area vertically, reducing the risk of them falling on other structures.
Cost
The cost to remove a tree can range from $200–$2,000 per tree, depending on its size and type. If you're clearing multiple trees in a wooded area, you might be able to pay by the acre.
When to remove trees
Ideally, trees should be removed in the winter when they're dormant, which is at least 8 months to a year before construction begins.
Protecting trees
If there are trees that you want to keep, you can protect them by:
Erecting barriers around the trees
Mulching around the base of the tree
Wrapping the trunk with protective material
Environmental impact
Professional land clearing services often work to minimize ecological disturbance and comply with regulations. Many projects involve selective clearing and preserving trees.
The City of Los Angeles has a Protected Tree Ordinance (PTO) that protects certain native tree and shrub species from being removed or relocated without a permit:
Protected trees
Include any Southern California native tree species that are at least four inches in diameter, measured 4.5 feet above the ground. This includes oak trees, such as the California Live Oak and Valley Oak, as well as the Southern California Black Walnut, Western Sycamore, and California Bay.
Protected shrubs
Include any Southern California native shrub species that are at least four inches in diameter, measured 4.5 feet above the ground.
Permits
A permit from the Board of Public Works, Urban Forest Division is required to relocate, remove, or alter a protected tree. Pruning also requires a permit and must follow the Oak Tree Pruning Standards.
Replacement trees
If a protected tree is removed, it must be replaced with a tree or shrub that is at least 15 gallons, one inch in diameter, and seven feet tall. The replacement should be similar in size and number to the tree that was removed.
Penalties
Willful damage to or illegal pruning of a protected tree can result in a $10,000 fine and/or six months in jail.
